Risk Assessment

A risk assessment is to prove that we thought about what the risks are during filming which could injure us. It also includes what can be done to prevent and minimise the effect of one of us being injured. We thought of the main hazards which is liable to occur and can possibly have health risks.

The character at the beginning (Mike) has a angered facial expression emphasising to the audience that he is out to get revenge. He then spots another car (Walter and Jesse) coming towards the other way and they both stop and get out. Mike then points a gun towards Walter showing his frustration and Jesse tries to stop this and protect Walter. This scene throughout contains tense music as it goes along with the plot line and anger of the characters. The scene is set in the middle of nowhere because they can't be seen and the location of the show is in New Mexico which features deserts. The part is a little montage containing clips from previous seasons with dialogue about Walter talking about his family and how he wants to protect them. The first half of the trailer is slow-paced to go along with the music in the background.

The intertitles shows Emmy Awards won by Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul for there acting so the audience know there is good acting. The line "We gonna start cooking again." means that Walter and Jesse and going to start producing crystal meth again to make money. The music from here changes into something more upbeat to change the mood of the trailer in contrast to the story line which is dark. Walter's wife says she is scared of Walter representing that he is a dangerous character and the guns in the next clip shows that there is going to be death involved. The intertitles from critics show to the audience that is very popular with critics saying 'Stunning' and 'Nail-Biting' which might encourage the audience to watch the show. The dialogue from Walter says he wants to 'cook' again and he wants to be at the top of the meth business which represents his dominance. The intertitles 'All Hail The King' represent that he is the leader and the most dominant character which is effective for the audience to understand. The last few scenes show the police and a crime scene which lets the audience know that it is a crime programme. The last scene features a line saying 'We're done...when i say we're done.' This also represents to the audience that Walter is assertive and he is telling the other character what to do. The second half of the trailer is very fast paced with the transitions synced in with the shots creating tension and very good editing.

Pulp Fiction Trailer

The beginning of the trailer shows the distribution company 'Miramax Films'. If the audience like the previous films they have distributed then they possibly might be interested and gives awareness to the company behind the picture. The lettering in the next part 'One of the most celebrated motion pictures of the year' represents to the audience that critics have enjoyed the film and this will encourage the audience because will take their word on it. It also says that it won the 1994 Palme d'Or (The best film at the Cannes Film Festival) which will also encourage the audience will think that it is very good and want to see why it got awarded the best film. The next thing is gun sounds and bullet holes on the screen which is to emphasise to the audience that it is going to involved around the action/thriller genre. The next part is a few clips shown very fast-paced and non-chronologically which helps for it not to give much of the story away.

The intertitle shows that the film is directed by Quentin Tarantino, which back in 1994 would only be popular because of Reservoir Dogs. If fans liked his previous film then they more than likely go to see his latest installment. The intertitles Loyalty, Betrayal, Crime indicate to the audience some of the story line and basically what parts of the film is going to be about. The 'Crime' lettering will tell the audience that the film is in the crime genre. If the audience is interested in crime films, then they will be likely to watch this one. When the female lead character is talking about her husband and cuts to a shot of her husband so it shows the audience what he looks like. The shots of the two main characters are shown showing some people (off-screen) which emphasises death. Soon it shows a little montage of the more excitable moments from the film, but again non-chronologically. There is a voiceover saying all of the actors/actresses involved in the film showing a clip of their face for each one, so the audience know who exactly is who and whether they are recogniseable actors like John Travolta, Samuel L.Jackson and Uma Thurman.

Trailer Conventions

A film trailer promotes the film so it helps to build recognition and hype until the film's release. Most film trailers featured the more exciting, dramatic or funny moments from the film which are shown non-chronologically so it does not give away any crucial plot details. A film trailer makes the audience aware of the film and if they are interested then they may want to go and see what the full feature is like.

It also helps to find their target audience so they know who is interested in the film whether it is their age or gender. For example if it is a action film then it will be stereotypically aimed at males whereas if it is a rom-com then it is stereotypically aimed at females. The characters in the film trailer could be realtable to the audience, for example if there is a female who is a teenager as the main character, then the target audience who is female teenager would more than likely go and see the film and they may feel connected.

Film production logos are usually shown at the start of the trailer. They are shown, so the audience are aware of the production and distribution companies are involved with the film. If the audience like the company, then this may interest them to continue watching the trailer if they liked their previous films. The audience will know what company it is because of its iconic logo. For example if it is Pixar or Dreamworks then the audience will know that they have a reputation for family friendly.

The title of the film is featured so the audience is aware of what the film is called. The font, colouring and backdrop are usually good signs of what the genre is going to be. For example if it is a horror film the backdrop would be black with white lettering. If it is colourful, then it is most likely going to be a comedy or kids film.

The age certificate at the end of trailer lets the audience what the legal age is to go and see the film. This proves a guideline to a target audience age e.g. if it is a U age certificate then the will understand it is a family friendly film to watch. If it is a 15 or 18 certificate, then that means the film will contain strong language, violence, sexual scenes and possibly disturbing scenes. Things that a younger audience should not watch at that age because these are subjects not mature enough to deal with.

Social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter may feature at the end of the trailer which can encourage the audience to find out more about the film, updates and photos. This is a good and effective way of advertising the film, which could lead it to being viral. The audience can share information with their friends so they are aware of the film and gain interest which may encourage them to go and see the film.

The release date is important because it makes the audience informed of when the film is coming out if they want to watch it. This is shown at the end of the trailer to grab the audience's attention and for them not to forget it.

Name captions are important for the trailer because if they saw the names of the actors or directors which they like and are interested in. For example if Steven Spielberg's name appeared on a trailer and the audience like his previous film such as E.T or Jurassic Park, then they will most likely want to see his latest film. This technique is a clever way of attracting a large audience, depending on how big the reputation is of the actor or director.

Music is usually to signify the genre and the pace of the trailer. For example if the music is upbeat and jolly, then the audience will assume that it is a comedy and/or family friendly film. Whereas if the music is intense then the audience will think it is a drama or thriller. So it is important for the music to be related to the film genre so the audience understands what that genre is.

Voice overs are used to provide an overview of the characters or the plot. The voice over can be added in during the footage of the trailer to explain to the audience without not giving too much away. The voice over can be dialogue that was featured in the film added in.

Crime Film Conventions - Settings

Crime films are very commonly set in large crowded cities because that is usually where crime is committed in real life. This is to provide a view a secret world for the criminal. This would stereotypically be in places like; dark nightclubs, streets with neon lights, sleazy bars, contraband, seedy living quarters and rooming houses. Exotic settings for crime films can add a sense of adventure and wealth. It's stereotypical for successful criminals in films with huge amounts of cash, fast cars and a mansion because of the money they have made  in the past doing criminal jobs. The lighting is usually low key because it adds the intensity to the film and when the storyline and themes are dark like for example in Sin City (2005), the film is in black and white to emphasise the bleak and dark themes happening in the film.

Crime Film Conventions - Narrative

Crime films often focus on the life of the criminal(s) or the criminal's victim(s) because they are main character within the plotline. Some Crime films emphasise of the rise and fall of the criminal, gang, murderers and lawbreakers. This may be because they have personal power struggles or conflict with the law or with a rival criminal or gang. This can be an example used with Scarface (1983) because Tony Montana is seen working his way up into the mob empire by being a simple criminal turning into the leader of the mob therefore he is rising. Then he has conflict with rival gangs representing his fall. Rivalry with other criminals/gangs is often a significant plot characteristic. Real life gangsters have been portrayed in some films such as Al Capone in the Untouchables (1987).This film focuses on the the government agents trying to bring Capone during prohibition.

Crime Film Genre

In our group of 3 we have decided to choose that our genre is going to be crime. A crime film is focused on the lives of criminals and it shows the audience the realistic portrayal to real-life criminal figures as a form of a 'Anti-Hero'. These criminal acts are usually glorified in movies and TV shows. The Crime genre can focus on protagonists side which can include; detectives, special agents, investigators, lawyers and the police. There are a variety of sub genres that fall within the crime film genre such as; Crime comedy, Crime thrillers, Film noir, Heist films, Hood films, Legal drama, Mob films, Mystery films and Police procedural. Some of the most popular films associated with crime include; Pulp Fiction, The Godfather and Reservoir Dogs. Some of the most popular crime TV shows are; Dexter, Luther and Breaking Bad.

Crime Film Conventions - Characters

In Crime films they are developed around the actions of criminals or gangsters which can include bankrobbers, hoodlums, criminal masterminds and underworld figures who are behind an organisation. These types of people tend to steal, murder or drug dealing their way into life.Criminals in films are usually street-smart, materialistic, ruthless, immoral and destructive. Some films featured countertypes of the criminals where they are seen as the protagonist in the films like in The Italian Job because the main characters are performing the heist.

The main character can have a female interest which is common in films, but in crime films there is a sense of danger because the main character needs to protect his female interest because a rival criminal/gang could kidnap/murder her just to get to the main character. Depending on where it is set or born some criminals may have an accent/dialect because it represents where they are from. It is stereotypical in gangster/mob films for the characters to have an  Italian accent/dialect because that is where the Mafia originated from. Costumes depending on the era when the film is set. For example a fedora hat and sharp suits would be used for gangster films in the 1940's.

Age of Heroes and Gravity trailers

Age of Heroes
File:Ageofheroes.jpg

Genre - The audience can understand that this is a action/war film because in the trailer there are many action scenes involving guns, explosions and hand-to-hand combat which is stereotypical in war films to include these. The scenes are very useful to pinpoint to the audience what the genre is.

Narrative - Because this is a war film the plot line is very simple, which is to defeat the enemy. This is the Unique Selling Point (USP) because this is what war films consists of. This is shown visually, for example with the battle scenes and guns. The dialogue connotes to the audience what kind of characters they are, what their plan is (Operation Grendel) and who the enemy is. The titles show who one of the main characters is (Sir Ian Fleming) and his No. 30 Commando Unit. In the background of the titles there is a British and Nazi Germany flag which indicates to the audience who the enemy is.

Audience - This film trailer is for a male target audience because these kinds of films will attract the male audience to go and see it because they stereotypically like their action films and will interest them more than the female audience. The actor Sean Bean will appear recogniseable with some of the audience because he is very well known in Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings so that may attract the audience to see his latest work. The target ages will be from 16 years old. Because people from that age like action films but also because this is based on a true story it may appeal to those who like history and/or are aware of the Commando Unit so that can mean people who are middle-aged or over may want to go and watch it.

Representation - The film trailer represents to the audience that war is a world of violence due to amount of battle scenes and gunfire that are featured in the film. This also shows how it affects the soldier being in a war and it also represents patriotism because it shows the audience that they are fighting for their country and their determination and confidence to win the war over their enemies.

Media Language - The trailer also shows the settings of where is being taken place. The trailer shows trees surrounding the soldiers which indicate to the audience that they are in the forest. The majority of the clips shows the Unit in the snow which can imply to the audience that it is taken place in the winter. One of the titles says 'In 1942' and because it is a war film, this will tell the audience that it is set in World War 2. The non-diegetic music in the background is epic because it connotes the Commando Unit's to succeed in their mission and the battle scenes.

Gravity

Gravity Poster.jpg

Genre - This trailer indicates to the audience that it is a science-fiction drama film. The audience can tell its science-fiction because it is set in space and the main characters are 2 astronauts. This will attract to the target audience if they are interested in science-fiction films.

Narrative - This trailer shows the story non-chronologically so it doesn't give too much away for the audience to not watch it. It shows an astronaut having to detach herself from the shuttle having being in a mid-orbit destruction and gets lost in space. The other astronaut has to rescue her and attempt to bring themselves back to Earth.

Audience -  The actor George Clooney and actress Sandra Bullock are the only on-screen characters in the film and they are very well known for their previous films. They have won awards in acting so that'll appeal to the audience that there is good quality acting featured in the film. This is why they are the USP. It indicates to the audience what the release date is so they are aware of when the film is coming out and also it is in 3D which will appeal to those of are fans of 3D technology. The makers of the film will want a mass audience to see this film.

Representation - One of the two main characters is a female astronaut, which is a countertype because astronauts are stereotypically male. This will appeal to the female audience knowing that the lead is female. She is represented as a mother because she wants to return back to Earth to see her daughter and that she is looks up to her. The main characters are very determined to complete the mission which connotes to them being heroic and trying ways to get back to Earth. This builds up the film suspense in the trailer because the audience want the main characters to complete the mission.

Media Language - The editing in this trailer is fast paced to go along with the tension of the clips. The sounds and music are synced with the transitions and cuts to make the trailer more dramatic. There are many shots that are included in the trailer. One of them for example was the POV shot from the female astronaut telling us what she can see visually. She says she "can't see anything" and shows the audience what it looks like in space looking down on Earth. There are a few fade to black transitions with the sound of breathing and heartbeats synced to the shots cutting which builds up tension towards the audience. There is not much sound featured in the trailer because the trailer mainly focuses on the film's plot line and dialogue.
