Crime Film/TV Trailer Research - Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction (1994) was a film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and the story revolves around the lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster's wife and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. The film is regarded one of the best films of all time. The film is known for its nonlinear story line, ironic mix of humour and violence, and dialogue. The IMDB rating is 9.0 and was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won 1 which was for Best Original Screenplay.

The beginning of the trailer shows the distribution company 'Miramax Films'. If the audience like the previous films they have distributed then they possibly might be interested and gives awareness to the company behind the picture. The lettering in the next part 'One of the most celebrated motion pictures of the year' represents to the audience that critics have enjoyed the film and this will encourage the audience because will take their word on it. It also says that it won the 1994 Palme d'Or (The best film at the Cannes Film Festival) which will also encourage the audience will think that it is very good and want to see why it got awarded the best film. The next thing is gun sounds and bullet holes on the screen which is to emphasise to the audience that it is going to involved around the action/thriller genre. The next part is a few clips shown very fast-paced and non-chronologically which helps for it not to give much of the story away.

The intertitle shows that the film is directed by Quentin Tarantino, which back in 1994 would only be popular because of Reservoir Dogs. If fans liked his previous film then they more than likely go to see his latest installment. The intertitles Loyalty, Betrayal, Crime indicate to the audience some of the story line and basically what parts of the film is going to be about. The 'Crime' lettering will tell the audience that the film is in the crime genre. If the audience is interested in crime films, then they will be likely to watch this one. When the female lead character is talking about her husband and cuts to a shot of her husband so it shows the audience what he looks like. The shots of the two main characters are shown showing some people (off-screen) which emphasises death. Soon it shows a little montage of the more excitable moments from the film, but again non-chronologically. There is a voiceover saying all of the actors/actresses involved in the film showing a clip of their face for each one, so the audience know who exactly is who and whether they are recogniseable actors like John Travolta, Samuel L.Jackson and Uma Thurman.
